We were driving from Denver to Lander, Wyoming along HW 789/287 somewhere north of Rawlins. The late afternoon sun to the west was producing these dramatically backlit wisps of what meteorologists and pilots call "virga," defined as "a mass of streaks of rain appearing to hang under a cloud and evaporating before reaching the ground."
